What is H2S Alive (Enform)?

H2S Alive has been adopted as a standard for the petroleum industry and employers have a preference for employees with this certification.

This course is intended for anyone currently working or wanting to work in the Oil & Gas Industry. The goal of H2S Alive is to prepare workers to recognize H2S (hydrogen sulfide) hazards and protect themselves, as well as perform a basic rescue during an H2S incident.

Hydrogen sulphide is an extremely hazardous gas that occurs naturally in crude petroleum and natural gas.  It is found in formations that are being drilled for oil, the gas is formed by the decomposition of organic matter containing sulphur.  Hydrogen sulphide is a highly toxic, colorless, combustible gas.  It is heavier than air and has the unmistakable odor of rotten eggs.  However, the sense of smell is not a reliable warning because exposure to this gas quickly deadens one’s sense of smell; relying on being able to detect its odor can provide a false sense of security.  High concentrations can cause shock, convulsions, inability to breathe, rapid unconsciousness, coma and death, and the effects can occur within as little as a single breath.  Usually, the poisoning it causes is through inhalation and has a toxicity similar to cyanide. Not only found in petroleum and natural gas but sometimes present in groundwater as well. This is a serious and hazardous work environment.  H2S Alive training is an important and vital part of working in the Oil & Gas industry.

Course Details:

Our course begins with a comprehensive but simple presentation on H2S (Hydrogen Sulphide) gas including its properties, exposure limits, health hazards and your initial response strategy. Your training will also include an introduction to Self Contained Breathing Apparatus. During this part of the course, you will learn how to do a pre-use inspection, how to operate the equipment and training in after-use inspection.

You will receive training in gas detection, which will require you to operate a manual gas detector and also gain an understanding of how electronic detectors work. Safety training with gas detection is very important for oilfield operations.

There will be an opportunity to learn various techniques on how best to lift, drag, or carry a casualty to a safe area. This is a fun interactive training to use rescue techniques for your certification.

The last part of your certification will involve a 35 question quiz of which most are multiple choice. Upon successful completion of all required components of H2S training, you will earn an H2S Alive temporary training certificate. Your permanent card will be mailed to you by ENFORM in 4-6 weeks. This permanent ticket will be valid for three years.
